Rhinology A2

Concept

Septoplasty

Septoplasty is one of the most common procedures performed by ENT. Inferior turbinectomy is often performed as part of the surgery to improve air flow through the nasal passage.

Empty nose syndrome is a form of secondary atrophic rhinitis and is a rare complication of turbinectomy. Patients may experience a range of symptoms including: sensation of shortness of breath, nasal obstruction or dryness. Nasal examination is normal, with no signs of physical obstruction. It is a diagnosis of exclusion. There is ongoing discussion surrounding the aetiology of the condition, where it could be related to changes in the nasal mucosa following surgery or possibly related to psychological causes.
